To be able to write your own essay about a song, you probably need to get an example of how to go about it. So, here is a well-structured guide on how to write a song analysis essay.

There are 3 important steps to consider

  1. To get started with an essay about your favorite song, make sure you summarize the message communicated through the song. Most importantly, pay close attention to the details contained in each of the song stanzas.
  2. Second, say what you consider to be the thematic concern expressed through the song. Here, you will be required to highlight the message passed through the song in relation to a real life situation.
  3. After stating the theme of the song, the next thing to do is to explain how the song affects you. Specifically, state how the writer of the song wants you to relate to the song. What feelings come to you when you consider the lyricist’s choice of words for the song? Does the musical composition influence your emotions and feelings? How does it do that?

Song Analysis Essay Organization

A good essay about favorite song needs to be organized in a certain way. For an essay that analyzes a song, it is important to have a formal introduction, the body and lastly, a concise conclusion highlighting the main items defining the song.

Introduction

In the introduction of an essay on a song, it is important to catch the attention of your reader. Ideally, you are expected to tell the reader the subject of your essay. State the background information surrounding the song. In the introduction, you are required to state the title. Make sure to write the theme of your chosen song, as well as a relevant thesis statement. A thesis statement is usually the last sentence of your introductory paragraph. In the thesis statement, state how the song has personally affected you, for example.

Body

You may consider starting this part of your essay with a summary of the song in a paragraph form. The next paragraph should now expound on the theme of your song on broad terms. After that, you may discuss the effect that the song has on you.

Conclusion

In the conclusion, summarize the main points of your essay. Again, you are also expected to restate your thesis statement backed up by information drawn from your earlier discussions in the essay.

Example

Here is an example of how to write an essay about a song. First, it is important to know how to write a song title in an essay before you can proceed: the song title must be embraced by quotations marks. For instance, here is an example of analysis on “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” song by Deep Blue Something.

In the first stanza of this song, Deep Blue Something band talks of a woman who suffers from the denial of some passion that was once shared. The woman is of the opinion that there is nothing common between the man and her and that there is no foundation upon which their love could be laid. However, there is evidence that there were common things between them that ignite the man’s love for her. Here is an example of how to quote a song in an essay.

You'll say, we've got nothin' in common

No common ground to start from

And we're falling apart

You'll say, the world has come between us

Our lives have come between us

Still I know you just don't care

(Lines 1-6)

The band speaking on behalf of the man gives a list of places from where the attraction started as seen in the chorus: Breakfast at the Tiffany’s, the film they watched and how they liked the movie as a proof that they clearly got something they share together passionately.

And I said what about Breakfast at Tiffany's?

She said I think I remember the film

And as I recall I think, we both kind o' liked it

And I said well that's, the one thing we've got

(Lines 7-10)

This is how you quote lines from the lyrics. However, if you only quote two lines, separate the lines using a slash (/) mark and remember to enclose them in quotation marks.

Ideally, this song is about two lovers where the woman seems reluctant to give in on the journey of love that has already begun. The song arouses some feelings I once had through such an experience, and it is depictive of love twists among lovers and how both need to fight for it in order to establish a sound relationship.

Essentially, this song is about a woman who wants to deny a love relationship. She pretends that there is nothing to bring the two of them together. However, there are episodes of having breakfast together and watching a movie together that is a vivid proof of common things that give the love relationship reasons to thrive.

Consider this example of a song analysis essay in your future assignments.
